02-20 & 02-20G This clay has been designed to feel more like a smooth stoneware than an earthenware body so it is used most often by throwers working in low fire. It does not contain any talc. The grogged version contains 5% 30-80 mesh grog and both clays fire quite white.
PHB & PHB-G This body fires pink-brown at Cone 06 and a little darker at Cone 04. This smooth, slightly sticky body is for handbuilding and throwing and accepts commercial low-fire glazes. It is used extensively when plasticity must be retained over a long working period as in children's programs. PHB with grog contains 5% of 30-80 mesh grog and is used for larger pieces. Both versions are extremely good dryers.
Low Red This body fires a darker red than PHB and has a smooth, clean surface. Low red is used more as a throwing clay although many of our customers use it for hand building. It is a much stronger body.
Red Majolica This body has a strong red colour. When fired to Cone 04 it will be as durable as most stoneware clays. Originally designed to provide an excellent backdrop for majolica decoration, this body provides a solution to the dilemma for making truly functional ware at low-fire temperatures. It is formulated for higher expansion/contraction to counter crazing.
#10-NW Similar to the old Newton Potters Clay. Higher in talc and less plastic but very satisfactory for all methods of forming. Excellent for smooth Raku. Commercial glazes fit this clay well.
#10-VW This very while, low fire earthenware clay is suitable for all methods of forming. Bisque at 04 - 05. Glaze at Cone 06. Fits most commercial glazes.
#20 A smooth, plastic, terra cotta colored clay for wheel throwing and excellent for hand building as well. Fires to a rich terra cotta red. EM 2134 clear glaze is formulated to work well with this clay body.
#20-G #20-G has the same properties as #20 with a fine grog added for slightly less shrinkage and improved workability. EM_2134 clear glaze is formulated to work well with this clay body.
#100 Black Smooth plastic throwing clay. A Jordan type clay for sculpture and handbuilding. Produces an excellent outdoor sculpture or planter clay when fired to Cone 4.
Stoneware Cone 6Mid White This body fires to a warm grey white at Cone 6 oxidation and is used extensively for both throwing and handbuilding. It is a fireclay-based body with a non-sticky feel. The addition of 5% of 30-80 mesh grog helps to make it an excellent dryer.
Smooth White This clay body was designed for the production potter who wants a smooth, white body without the problems associated with porcelain. It has a larger than normal number of different clays in it to ensure a stable, reliable formulation.
CCSS (speckled) This body fires reddish tan with dark specks produced by the small amount of granular manganese. It is very responsive and trims with ease. It contains 8% of 30-80 mesh grog.
Mid Cal Grogless This clay fires light brown at Cone 6 oxidation and is an all-purpose firec lay based body. It is very plastic with a slightly greasy feel when throwing. The absence of grog gives it a smooth surface which trims with ease.
Mid Cal 5 This body is similar to Mid Cal Grogless with the addition of 5% of 30-80 mesh grog for those who like a clay with tooth. This aids in the production of large work and ease of drying.
Dark Mid Cal 5 This body is very similar to Mid Cal 5 but fires to a darker brown colour at Cone 6 oxidation. The higher iron content helps some glazes to develop richer shades.
Mid Red This is a fairly smooth body with a 5% of 30-80 mesh grog for some tooth. Mid Red is a very responsive throwing clay which fires to a strong red colour.
Mid Smooth Stone This body is a very smooth, plastic clay with no grog or coarse fireclay in the formula. It fires to an off-cream colour at Cone 6 oxidation. Mid Smooth Stone is designed as a throwing clay but it is also used for handbuilding when a smooth clean surface is required. Glazes are not muted at all. This is a good compromise between stoneware and porcelain.
#60 WC-608 This clay is compounded to be a stoneware clay with specks that bleed through the glaze, giving the appearance of iron burning through, typical of reduction glazes and clay. A very popular throwing clay for production potters who want to add the speck dimension to their ware. #65 WC-609 Smooth white stoneware, good for throwing and production of functional whiteware. #80 WC-613 Versatile, medium textured throwing body. Fires to red/brown in oxidation, very plastic for throwing. #100 EM-110 Gray-brown in color, this smooth, plastic "Jordan type" clay is suitable for throwing, sculpting and hand building. Usually fired to Cone 2. A good outdoor sculpture and planter clay when fired carefully to Cone 3 - 4. Stoneware Cone 8-9New Light This body fires to a light grey at Cone 8 - 9 oxidation. It has 5% of 30-80 mesh grog and a small amount of fireclay for texture and workability. This is an excellent throwing body but it is also used for hand building.
Stoneware Cone 10Sandstone Sandstone is a very popular high-fire stoneware. It fires stony grey at Cone 10 reduction and light grey at Cone 10 oxidation. It is a superb throwing clay with a small amount of fireclay and 5% of 30-80 mesh grog to aid in drying. This clay is used extensively for functional work.
10-75 White Stoneware This clay is an off-white porcelaineous stoneware with excellent plasticity. Specially selected white-firing ball clays and stonewares and the absence of fireclay and grog give 10-75 a very smooth clean surface. The light colour allows you to develop excellent colour response without the problems of procelain.
Pro-Stone This body has been designed for the professional production potter. It fires to a buff colour in oxidation and warm brown in reduction. Contains many raw materials to minimize changes caused by varying ingredients. It contains 5% of 30-80 mesh grog and can be used for throwing, handbuilding, pressing extruding etc.
Newman Red This clay fires to a strong tan at Cone 10 oxidation and a beautiful orange-red at Cone 10 reduction. It is a fireclay type body with 5% grog. Newman is an excellent dryer and your glazes will really come alive over the very attractive surface.
Porcelain Cone 6MCS This is our most popular Cone 6 porcelain. It is a smooth robust, plastic body which fires white. Althought it is used mainly as a throwing body it can be used to handbuild small-to-medium sized pieces.
6-50 An alternative to MCS, this body is a little less plastic but tends to fire a bit whiter. Although it is a little tighter than MCS it shrinks slightly less.
#16 Grolleg porcelain. A translucent plastic body excellent for throwing thin pieces, large or small. More silica to reduce crazing in some glazes. Good for slab forming. Porcelain Cone 8-9CSP This body fires white at Cone 8-9 oxidation. It contains enough ball clay to give it the working characteristics of a smooth stoneware but has more the look of a porcelain. For a porcelain it is particularly easy to trim and dry.
Porcelain Cone 10H.H.P. This body fires very white at Cone 10 oxidation and a little grey in reduction. It is a classic high-kaolin, low-ball clay porcelain for throwing and handbuilding. It is particularly easy to trim and dry and is known as a trouble-free body.
10-86 English Porcelain This is a premium Grolleg-based porcelain which fires very white, with excellent translucency. It is completely vitrified at Cone 10 to aid in translucency so care must be taken to overfire. It contains no ball clay.
#570 Made primarily of English Grolleg. Contains plasticizer for a fine translucent porcelain for throwing, thin slab work and hand building. A well accepted standard for grolleg clay bodies. Raku ClaysWhite Sculpture/Raku This is a coarse handbuilding clay which was originally designed for large sculptures. It contains 25% of 30-80 mesh grog so it is suitable for pieces with large cross sections. It does not contain any fireclays so it fires quite white at Cone 05 or in raku. At Cone 10 reduction it is a strong grey and in oxidation it is a grey-white.
Thompson Raku This clay body is designed primarily for raku. It fires a light buff colour at Cone 04. It is quite a plastic clay and contains 20% of 30 - 80 mesh grog which allows for large scale pieces.
Brown Sculpture NOTE: This body replaces Black Sculpture which now available by custom
order only (30 boxes minimum).
Self-Hardening ClaysMexo-Red WC-640 & Suitable for throwing, coiling and sculpting. Allow for some shrinkage. Uniform thickness is desirable and may be achieved by hollowing out sections of greatest mass. To maintain workability, store Mexo in an air-tight container until work is completed. Air dries quite well. Do not fire! Finish with acrylic paints. |
